Rights of the Resident

  • Each resident is warmly welcomed and provided with quality care regardless of economic status or other considerations, including age, sex, race, religion, or disability.

  • The dignity of each resident is honoured within a caring and compassionate environment that addresses the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural needs.

  • Each resident and his or her responsible party/agent has the right to make informed decisions regarding care services and daily schedules while living at Father Lacombe Care Centre, and is given the opportunity to be involved in the care-planning process.

  • Confidentiality of information is maintained as required under legislation of the Province of Alberta.

  • The sacredness of human life is respected.

  • Programs related to resident care are evaluated for quality and appropriateness.

  • Health, education and social needs of the residents are evaluated. In collaboration with other agencies, needed services are developed and supported.

  • Each resident/resident’s responsible party/agent or family member has access to support groups that assist in understanding the changes experienced.

  • Each resident/resident’s responsible party/agent or family member has the right to have his or her concerns addressed in a timely and professional manner.

We further believe and uphold that every resident has the right

  • To have access to other agencies that serve the health, education and social needs.

  • To retain his or her own physician whenever possible, or to choose a physician from the Home’s roster.

  • To have trained, competent, compassionate staff administering the care.

  • To have his or her family act as designated spokesperson and substitute decision-maker.

  • To refuse to be part of experimental research.

  • To be free from abuse, neglect and chemical and physical restraints, except where restraints are needed for an emergency or a specific physician order.

  • To receive, upon request, a copy of the facility’s policies/rules and inspection reports

  • To meet with people from the community for any purpose: religion, business, politics, etc. providing there is no infringement on other residents’ rights.

  • To protection and advocacy services, including the opportunity for private communication with a representative of a protection and advocacy service.

  • To be free from abuse, neglect and chemical and physical restraints, except where restraints are needed for an emergency or when they are ordered by a physician.

  • To exercise his or her rights of citizenship, including raising concerns, reporting abuse and neglect, or recommending changes and improvements on behalf of himself/herself or other residents, without fear of interference, coercion, discrimination or reprisal.

  • When both husband and wife are residents of the facility, they shall be able to share a room if mutually requested, unless it is medically contraindicated and documented.
